It is a field that deals with graphic representation of data and information. It is a particularly efficient of communicating when the data or information is numerous as for example a time series.

It is also the study of visual representation of abstract data to reinforce human cognition.

It is also one of the steps in Data Science.
Data and information has its roots in Statistics and is generally considered a branch of Descriptive Statistics.
